"What I've Been Listening To" by Jay Larsen
4/3/2004

There is a lot of good music out there.
Clearchannel just doesn't want you to hear it.
So try some alternative channels.
Here are a few of the CDs I have been listening to lately:
Sushirobo, The Light Fingered Feeling of Sushirobo
****
Quirky, yet controlled.
I've had this CD in heavy rotation ever since I bought it.
A rock steady beat with quirky, yet intelligent lyrics.
A fun, funky combination of synth, bass and art-punk vocals.

The Faint, Danse Macabre
****
Driving synthesizers, dark vocals, yet retaining a wry sense of humor. Great hooks that drive themselves deep into the brain so that you find your subconscious projecting them onto the inside of your skull at the oddest moments. I am looking forward to their next release.

Menthol, Rock Science
***
A retro flash back to the funnest part of the 80's, Devo, the Cars, Thomas Dolby. The only bad thing about this CD is that it is over too soon. And I haven't seen any thing from these guys in a long time. Hopefully they are still out there.

Super Furry Animals, Everything by the SFA
*****
These Welsh oddballs have me hooked. Songs that should be annoying are instead endearing. A unique combination of garage rock, electronica, and art rock. You have to experience SFA to have any idea what I am talking about. Try Rings Around the World if you are new to the Super Furrys.
Get them where ever you can, they can be hard to get a hold of in the USA.
Some of SFA stuff is at Insound.com
And of course I've been listening to
The Thunder Echo Ensemble, Cosmonaut
And you should to.
